The cafes of Europe appeared spontaneously whenever there was something delightful or fascinating to look at nearby — children rolling hoops along graveled walks, chestnut trees in bloom, a magnificent Renaissance cathedral, fishermen along the Seine, starlets from Cinecittà, or even a remarkable flock of pigeons. New York has the pigeons, but even they do not seem to be the best kind.
